Tips on avoiding these common driving distractions

November 29, 2023

Distracted driving is linked to thousands of deaths and injuries every year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The leading causes are visual distractions that cause you to take your eyes off the road, manual distractions leading you to take your hands off the wheel, and cognitive distractions that take your mind off driving. Here at Al's One Stop Auto, we’re well aware of the challenges drivers face on today’s roads, and we want you to be focused and safe when you’re behind the wheel.

Here are some guidelines to help drivers avoid the pitfalls that can take their eyes, hands or mind off the task at hand, courtesy of AAA:

  • Any activity that can prevent you from devoting your complete attention to driving is a distraction. Save it for before or after you get behind the wheel.
  • Adjustments to mirrors, seats, climate controls, sound systems and GPS should be made before taking the vehicle out of park.
  • Children and pets should be secured before getting underway. If they need your attention, wait until you can pull off the road safely. Don’t reach into the backseat while driving.
  • Items that become loose and roll around on the floor or under the seat while you’re driving should be stowed away safely beforehand.
  • Dressing and grooming should be done at home – not behind the wheel.
  • Minimize cellphone use while driving, and never use texting, emailing, video game or internet functions.
  • Whenever possible, avoid eating while driving. If you must eat, avoid messy foods that can be a challenge to handle.
