Autumn’s Here. Is Your Vehicle Ready For The Season?

August 28, 2023

Autumn is a favorite time of year for many of us. The heat, humidity and mosquitoes are gone, the air is crisp, and football season is underway. Autumn is also a great time to hop in the car for some leaf-peeping. As the experts at Al's One Stop Auto want to remind you, it’s also the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is prepared for seasonal driving conditions.

Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind as autumn approaches.

  • There’s less daylight, so be sure your headlights are clean and correctly aligned. Driving in the dark means watching for walkers, runners, and bicyclists, who may not always be wearing high visibility clothing.
  • Be on the lookout for children walking to and from school bus stops.
  • It’s deer-breeding season, so be cautious when driving through wooded areas. Deer travel in groups, so if one crosses the road it’s likely others will follow.
  • Rainy weather and fallen leaves make for slippery conditions. Proceed with caution, especially when making a turn.
  • Cool autumn mornings may produce fog. Use your low beams for best visibility. High beams may actually make visibility worse.
  • Check your windshield wipers for wear; this may be the season to replace them.
  • Don’t park your vehicle directly over a pile of leaves, which can catch fire from the vehicle’s exhaust.
  • Don’t drive over piles of leaves, which children like to play in.
  • Check the pressure and tread wear on your tires, including the spare. Changing temperatures can lead to a loss in pressure.
